African Battle Wounds
Andy sent a voice memo this week, so here is the bullet points from that:
..Good Week, working with my comp from Congo, Elder Kinavuidi. He’s super cool. He’s trying to learn english. This last week we talked about his and hers. French doesn’t have that.
…Fun week. Just teaching and trying to find people. The area I’m in right now is one of the oldest areas, the ward is the first ward that was created in this country. A lot of people know the church. It’s hard to find people, because it’s so old, everyone knows the church. My comp and I decided this last week to take a couple days, and instead of knocking doors we would go and talk to members and go and get them involved in the work. It was actually really cool. We decided to choose members who were older in the ward, older in the church, and have callings, and know missionary work more. We had some good ideas that we put into practice. It was a lot of fun, and we got to get to know members more, and got them to feel more comfortable coming to use with their friends, and working with us more.
…Friday night, we went to a delicious restaurant, Beefcuts. It’s super good. We went there and ate, and anytime I go there I instantly start thinking about Chubby’s at home waiting for me. Good food. Good company.
…Saturday, all four of us went and hung out with this member family. We were just talking and joking and having fun. I decided to show them that game where you put your head on the pole on the ground and spin around it like 10-15 times. I did it once and I fell and rolled in the dirt and had to sit there for like 2 minutes until I wasn’t dizzy. Then, we decided to do a game. We drew a finish line and all of us went to the same starting point. We all did it, spinning around like 10 times, and we had to run to get to the finish line. So there were like 6 of us, the 4 missionaries, and two daughters from this family. And we all do it, and you know it’s not that good of idea having all these dizzy people running at once. They all did it, but me, I couldn’t stop running to the left. I was trying my hardest, consciously, to go to the right, and my body kept going to the left. There was a tree I could run into or a cement wall that went to go into the parcel. I decided to see what would happen, I didn’t have any control, and I ended up falling into the wall. I cut my arm and have a battle scar wounds from the mission, so that’s pretty cool. and I cut my thigh on this wall. I lay there, and the tree was moving in circles. It was not good. Safe to say I did not win the race. We also showed them the Macarena, video is in my google photos. go watch it. The work is going good here. We have this lady we get a couple weeks ago, her name is Agath. She was on the side of the road, This was when I was still with Elder Henrickson, and she was on the road and we just kind of walked up to talk to her. She was on a phone call. usually they don’t hang up, but she hung up. and she talked to us, and we took her number, and she said she lived far from here. On my mission, any time we meet someone like that and they say “I’ll text you the location of my house” they never actually do that. But she like actually texted me and said “ if you meet me at this gas station, I’ll show you where my house is and we can talk more.” We had an awesome lesson with her and she started coming to church now, like 4 times. She has an adorable kid named Ariel, who is terrified of me., and stares daggers at me and doesn’t smile, but we’ll be friends soon enough. Agath is super cool, and progressing really well, and the problem is she doesn’t fully understand that the Catholic church doesn’t have the authority to baptize her. But she is starting to understand a little more, and started coming to the institute class they do every Wednesday night. So, I’m hoping that in a couple weeks we can put her on date.
…Donu, is the dad of the family that I was telling you about last week, that randomly asked us to come and teach him. He is only free on Wednesday nights because of his work and we went there and he ended up being sick, body aches, low fever, signs of malaria. He said he didn’t feel good enough to be talking with us, but his family… and these are his words, I translated them…told him about some healing blessings that we can do to help people like him. So we explained it to him and explained that it works on the priesthood and his faith. So, my companion anointed him and I did the sealing and blessing. It was really cool, I definitely felt the spirit guiding my words and not really fully understanding what I was saying. you could tell it wasn’t me putting the words , coming up with the words. We gave him this blessing and basically told him that we would pray for him. The next day around noon I text him daughter and she said he was feeling a lot better and went to work today. WHAT! That’s an awesome miracle that definitely will building on his faith and on mine. It’s definitely super cool to see that these blessings actually work and really help him. Every time I see something like that I’m amazed, which I shouldn’t be, because of course it’s the Power of God. But it was super cool to see that happen, and that he had enough faith in a church he isn’t even a part of yet to ask us to give him a blessing. We haven’t heard if he was able to move his work or not, but we’ll talk to him next Wednesday. about that and I’ll keep you updated.
…Tonight we have a kid from our ward who is leaving on his mission, going to Nigeria this week, so we had a party. He gave a testimony, and we had a lot of food. It was a lot of fun.
…We have some good things going on. I’m definitely learning and growing every day. You know like that song says, “ Loving, fishing, hunting, growing, loving every day.” you know what I’m saying. But, hope you are all doing good. Hope your life is going good. I invite you all to go listen to some conference talks. They are good.
…Almost forgot. I got in a fight with our ice box today. there is a giant ice block in there and I decided to destroy it so we can use our drawers again. And it won. I’m not going to lie. I got more of the ice out, but there is a giant ice block that is probably like 6-7 inches thick that is keeping this drawer frozen, but the freezer definiately won today. I broke two of our drawers and burnt my thumb. I was using boiling water and trying to get the steam to melt it quicker. but I accidentally put my thumb in the boiling water and got a blister and it won, so, it didn’t feel good. And the ice block is still there. I gave up for this week, but will get it next week, so I’ll keep you updated on that. That adds to my African battle scars. Africa is taking a toll on me!
Hope you all are going good. Have a fantastic week. Go listen to conference talks by Thomas S. Monson. They are fire.
Love, Elder McKee
